Training

We conduct specialized training in the following formats

  • Trainings For Promotion of Inclusive Environments: Customised training modules to assist individuals and organisations in Universal Design, Sensitization & Disability Awareness, Communication & Disability Etiquettes, Emergency Evacuation and Disaster Management etc.
  • Training of Trainers Workshops (Technical) for Architects, Urban and Town Planners, Policy makers, Academic institutions, stake holders/service providers, NGOs and individuals.
  • Disability Equality Training - Promoting disability as an Equality Issue for disabled persons and Disabled Persons Organizations (DPOs).

Disability Awareness/Experiential Exercise Training Workshops

We conduct:

  • Disability Awareness Training workshop:  2 hours- ½ day interactive modules which provides basic awareness on how to assist persons with disabilities and raise awareness regarding the access needs of persons with diverse disabilities.
  • Wheelchair handling Training programme to service providers, institutions and employers/staff etc. to assist wheelchair in general and emergency situations/ evacuation.

Objectives

  • To experience barriers and difficulties for persons with disabilities.
  • To understand how to assist/guide persons with disabilities.(e.g. assisting wheelchair users, guiding persons with vision and hearing impairment)

We have conducted Trainings for:

  1. School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Delhi, 2005-06: 2 workshops for faculty and Students of Transport Planning, Architecture and Industrial Design.
  2. Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), Delhi, July 2006: Scientists, Researchers, Academicians, Transport, Town & Urban Planners.

Samarthyam strongly believes that sensitization workshops for policy makers, stakeholders and front staff (drivers, conductors, persons manning information counters etc.), play a vital role in the promotion of accessibility in public transportation.  Office of the CCPD with Samarthyam as resource, conducted sensitization workshops for the Ministry of Surface Transport, Ministry of Urban Development, DMRC, DTC and STA officials. 

Lokayan (NGO) and Samarthyam organized a series of six sensitisation workshops for the three-wheeled/auto rickshaw drivers at Badge Training at State Transport Authority (STA) Burari, Delhi. 

Auto drivers were sensitised regarding the needs and safety of persons with diverse disabilities including transfer from wheelchair (both independent & assisted users).  Around 350 drivers participated in the programme. It was a pioneering effort and first of its kind in India.

Similar training were organized for

  • Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) for bus drivers in 2006.
  • Civic agencies, transport departments, stakeholders and stake holders etc. under the aegis of CCPD in 2003.

Training of Trainers (TOT)

Promotion of Non-Handicapping Barrier Free Environment and Creation of Resource Pool of Access Auditors

We undertake TOT workshops to:

  • Create a Resource Pool of certified accredited access auditors/officers who will have the basic understanding of diverse access needs and requirements of disabled persons.
  • These trainers will have competence to conduct access audits, recommend changes and monitor implementation.

Trainings conducted so far

  • For Office of the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (Statutory body under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India) 2005-06: at Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), Chandigarh (Union Territory) and Raipur (Chattisgarh),. Around 300 participants from 14 States with diverse backgrounds including architects, engineers and urban planners and NGOs were trained on importance of BFE and practical field visit i.e. access audit and report presentation. In the year 2001- 2002, training workshops were organized at Delhi, Hyderabad and Guwahati.
  • Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) (Statutory body under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India), 2003-04: Bangalore (Karnataka) & Chennai (Tamil Nadu).
  • Transport Department, Bangalore, 2006: Organized Training Workshops for Civil Engineers and Architects of BMRCL, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) in Association with Action Aid India.
  • Handicap International 2006: Civil Engineers, Architects from Baroda and Ahmedabad (Gujarat State) at New Delhi.
  • Post-Tsunami reconstruction work, 2005-06: organized 3 workshops for Public Works Department (PWD) Civil Engineers, Architects and contractors in Port Blair & Rangat, Andaman Island.
  • National Seminar on PwDs and Elderly, Kolkatta (West Bengal) 2004: organized by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India and IIT, Kharagpur
  • Department of Social Welfare, Government of Goa, Goa, 2004: Three-day TOT for 27 Architects.
  • Post Earthquake reconstruction work in Gujarat State 2003:
  • TOT for 30 Architects from Ahmedabad, Baroda and Kutch Bhuj.
